The Burnout ⎼ Sophie Kinsella

“When I first started here, a couple of years ago, I did feel lucky. Every day I woke up and thought, ‘Lucky me!’ But at some point that transitioned into waking up and thinking, ‘Oh God, oh please, I can’t do this, how many emails have I got, how many meetings, what have I missed, how will I cope, what am I going to do?’

The Burnout, Sophie Kinsella

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Sasha is in her thirties and working at a travel start-up, and she’s starting to lose it. She’s working from the time she wakes up to the time she goes to bed, and it seems like there’s ten more emails every time she turns around. After a small breakdown at work, Sasha decides to take three weeks of PTO to take a break. And her mom knows the perfect place, the small seaside town they always visited in the summer.

Sasha’s mom books her a whole experience at the fancy hotel in town, but when Sasha arrives, the hotel is very rundown, and she is one of four guests at the hotel. The staff are bending over backwards to keep the guests happy, and everything seems to be okay. Then Sasha meets the other single guest, Finn. He’s loud, he’s argumentative, and he’s determined to spoil Sasha’s peace. Can they find some common ground, or will Sasha get burned out of her rest and relaxation?

The only reason you wouldn’t enjoy this book is if you’re not interested in pure fun. This book is goofy, silly, sweet, cute, adorable, all of the sunshine adjectives. It’s also so funny. The one-liners and background mayhem from the hotel staff, Sasha’s family, and the townspeople, are all perfectly added into the perfect seaside adventure.

I loved this book. I love every Sophie Kinsella book, but this was wonderful. It’s got a moody beach, enemies to friends to lovers, and excellent banter. It’ll pull you out of a reading funk, or an emotional funk. It’d be perfect to read anywhere at any time. Just read this book, please.
