“Twenty-three minutes later, she picks up the phone from the kitchen counter and dials. When the emergency operator picks up, she speaks in a level voice. ‘My name is Emma Palmer. Our parents are dead. We need the police.’”
No One Can Know, Kate Alice Marshall
Ever wondered what secrets you’d willingly keep for your siblings? And how long you’d be able to keep them? Emma’s been keeping secrets for her 2 sisters for 14 years, but she’s moving back to their hometown, and it seems like her resolve might begin to crack.
The plot of this book was gripping, and I was sold from the description alone. The book features points of view from each of the three sisters, with moments in the present and moments in the past, around their parents’ deaths. It was expertly paced, with new twists revealed in each chapter. The dual timelines kept the suspense high as information was slowly given out.
The only thing that felt slightly off for me were some of the character’s interactions. The scenes between the sisters themselves, and with the locals, often went into extremes that didn’t make sense. There were multiple moments that felt out of character and didn’t seem to have a purpose in the overarching plot as a twist.

Other than that, this book was great in a true Kate Alice Marshall way! The story stuck with me for days after I finished it, and I’ve recommended it to all the moody thriller lovers I know. Thanks to NetGalley and Flatiron Books for the advanced copy!
