The Felserpent Chronicles ⎼ Katie Keridan

“Filled with old friends and new allies, devastating betrayals and surprising revelations, this heart-pounding conclusion to the Felserpent Chronicles ends where it began: in the gray waters of Death. Controlling the past might change the future, but will saving their world cost Sebastian and Kyra the very bond that binds them across time?

Realm United ⎼ Katie Keridan

Rating: 5 out of 5.

I received this entire series from BookSparks to prepare for the final installment, Realm United.

My go-to fantasy series process is to block off as much time as possible and dive right in. Thankfully I followed protocol, because I read the first 2 books in 24 hours. I loved that the female main character, Kyra, was determined to get answers no matter what, and that the male main character, Sebastian, lived up to every broody stereotype.

These books were a delight to read. Like with any fantasy series, world-building is most prevalent in the first book. Even when getting to know the two different realms, their terminology, and their customs, everything was woven into the story seamlessly. My favorite part of the world-building was the Cyphers, a version of animal guides with magical capabilities. Kyra is bonded with a wise and solemn lynx named Aurelius, while Sebastian is bonded with a chatty, always-hungry bat appropriately named Batty.

My favorite thing about reading fantasy is feeling like I’m a kid again, back when everything felt a little more believable. Keridan did a fantastic job of creating a fun and magical world that I wanted to explore for hundreds of hours. Things like magical cloaks that changed color, hidden unicorn sanctuaries, and escapades with talking animals, solidified that feeling for me. I wanted to be able to spend time with every character we met and every place we visited.

If you’re looking for a fantasy series that isn’t over-hyped, this is a perfect pick! It leans YA, so there’s no spice, but there is a beautiful love story told over the course of a century that’s charming to follow. I’d also recommend this to anyone who loved the goofy little animal sidekick in movies (specifically every talking animal in a Barbie movie).
