“A bed-and-breakfast for the brokenhearted might hold the key to another chance at love.”
The Heartbreak Hotel, Ellen O’Clover
Was my introduction to this book literally B. K. Borison’s recommendation to read it? Yes. Would I base every decision off B. K. Borison’s recommendations if I could? Also yes. And luckily for me, she was completely right. I adored this book with my whole heart. It was tender and heart-breakingly raw, with a cast of characters that grabbed my heart.
The book follows Louisa as she goes through a break-up and realizes the only way she’ll be able to stay in her beautiful rental home is to turn into a bed-and-breakfast. She decides to advertise it specifically as a place for the brokenhearted, and quickly begins to welcome in a myriad of guests looking for a soft place to land.
This book was soft, sad, and relentlessly optimistic in the face of tragedy. Louisa, Mei, Henry, Nan, and all the other characters brought the story to life with a distinct form of melancholy. Getting to each character and their personal heartbreak is really what made me love this book. I wanted to stay at Louisa’s gorgeous house just as long as she did, spending time in grief with those who visited.
I’d recommend this book to anyone looking for a blend of found family, healing, and romance. It’s got some heavier topics and the romance isn’t the full focus of the story, but the writing is beautiful and the characters will steal your heart.
Thanks to Berkley for the free book and Netgalley for the free advanced copy in exchange for an honest review!
