The Librarians ⎼ Sherry Thomas

Murder disrupts the peaceful, predictable daily routine of life for four quirky librarians who must protect their life-altering secrets.

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Librarian stereotypes are sometimes pretty harsh. In the media, they’re mostly old ladies with tight buns, musty sweaters, and little glasses, shushing boisterous kids. In reality, there are no two librarians exactly the same, and most of them have at least a few quirks. Enter four librarians at a small branch in Austin, Texas, who find themselves in the middle of two separate murder investigations! Each librarian has their own skills and secrets, and their combined force creates a fun community environment.

I really enjoyed the 4 main characters in this book. I think the character development was done well, and even with all 4 POVs, I felt like I had connected to each of them! Their group dynamics were fun, with goofy banter and the beginnings of a found family environment pulled me in, and I was truly rooting for their overall success.

Unfortunately, the 4 POVs also included a past timeline, a present timeline, a 4 days in the past timeline, and a 2 days in the past timeline. And that’s a lot of different strings to grab and weave together into a cohesive storyline. And while I was able to piece everything together, it felt like a chore. Trying to keep who knew what when straight was complicated enough, but then each character’s secrets were added in, creating a tangled web that was almost too much for me to bear.

Overall, I really appreciated what this book was doing. I loved the concept of librarians solving a murder, and truly liked each of the main characters. If you’re looking for a twisty and surprising book, this may be a great choice for you!
