Nell Masters is certain someone is following her. 14 years earlier, when Nell went by the name Elle Nugent, she witnessed a student, Bryony Sanders, getting into a stranger’s car. When Bryony was found murdered, Elle became obsessed with finding the person responsible. She was convinced she knew who it was and her fixation with Brett Parker, the man she accused, led her down a dangerous path . . .
Now, Nell tries to convince herself that this unnerving feeling of being watched is all in her mind. Has someone from her past discovered her new identity? Has the stalker become the stalked? Or is there something even more deadly at play?
I read Behind Closed Doors by B.A. Paris in 2021, and I’m still thinking about it to this day. And every B.A. Paris has had crazy twists, morally complex characters, and a satisfying conclusion, and When I Kill You was no exception.
The book follows Nell Masters, a woman with many secrets to hide, and a stalker threatening to bring the secrets to light. As the story flips back and forth between Nell’s life now, and her previous life as Elle Nugent, the tension and suspense continues to build. In Nell’s present life, she is beginning to get suspicious of everyone in her extremely small inner circle. As Elle Nugent, she interacted with a woman named Bryony in the final hours before her death, and Elle begins to fixate on solving Bryony’s murder.
As the two timelines begin to merge, the tension gets even higher. I was lucky enough to get advanced audiobook and ebook copies, and literally listened to the book all day at work, then immediately went home and flew through the rest of the ebook, successfully reading the entire book in a day. And I truly felt like I was going to go insane if I didn’t get answers ASAP!
Overall, this is a classic crime thriller with some classic B.A. Paris elements. I’d recommend this book to anyone looking for a fast-paced thriller that will have you rushing to the ending! And if you’re an audiobook girlie, I’d highly recommend this! Georgia Maguire did a phenomenal job with the narration and had me absolutely hooked!
