As the summer heats up and another monster storm begins twisting its way towards St. Medard’s Bay, Geneva learns that some people can be just as destructive—and as deadly—as any hurricane, and that the truth of what happened to Landon Fitzroy may not be the only secret the town is keeping…
If you’re looking for a book to make you absolutely terrified of hurricane season, this is the book for you! Set in the small town of St. Medard’s Bay, Alabama, the story follows Geneva Corliss, the owner of a local seaside inn named the Rosalie Inn. Geneva hosts a writer at the inn who’s investigating some St. Medard’s Bay hurricanes, and Geneva learns more and more about the inn’s history, as well as her family’s.
St. Medard’s Bay and The Rosalie Inn have weathered its fair share of storms, and the book describes several of the hurricanes that have torn through the town, taking several lives in the process. I really enjoyed how Hawkins used the tension and terror of the hurricanes to keep the plot moving forward. Her descriptions of the storms had me almost ready to board up my windows!
I always enjoy Rachel Hawkins’s books, and this was no exception! With different timelines and POVs all building into the same climax, you feel like you’re actually in the eye of the storm as you learn the final big reveals. Hawkins is fantastic at creating dynamic characters with personal agendas and a loose relationship with the truth that has you second-guessing every fact you learn. Hawkins also makes sure that the environment and scenery of the book is a character itself, permeating every chapter. But Hawkins’s most important skill is keeping each book fresh. Even if you’ve read her entire backlog of thrillers, this plot will be unique and captivating.
I’d recommend this thriller to pretty much anyone who doesn’t have an intense fear of hurricanes! The plot gets a little crazy at the end, which can either be a pro or a con for thriller readers, but the overall book was a fun and fascinating read.
