As the past resurfaces, old alliances fray. A teacher, a café owner, and a psychologist are drawn together by memories they’d rather forget. Each holds a piece of the puzzle—and a dark secret of their own. When a new disappearance sends shock waves through the town, blackmail begins, and the stakes climb higher.
In a race against time, these women must confront the truth or risk becoming the next victims of a past they cannot escape. With tension rising and danger lurking, one thing is someone is destined to kill again.
If you’ve been following me for any amount of time, you know that I love a Darby Kane thriller. There’s just something so cathartic and soothing about an absolutely crazy plot and morally gray characters who are ready and willing to scheme, plot, and kill. In Such a Clever Girl, we’re dropped into the small town of Sleepy Hollow, NY. The town’s wealthy and crotchety patriarch, Xavier Tanner, has been dead for a little over a month, and his will is finally being read. The Tanner family is no stranger to speculation and rumors, as Xavier’s son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren disappeared without a trace some 15 years earlier.
There are multiple POVs and interwoven timelines telling the Tanner family lore through speculation, fact, and pure gossip. I really enjoyed getting perspectives from the townspeople who were involved with the Tanner family but not truly a part of the family itself. I also really liked how the town of Sleepy Hollow was used to emphasize the dark, foreboding, and spooky atmosphere.
If you’re looking for unreliable narrators, a secretive family, and a nosy town trying to make sense of it all, this is a perfect book for you! The plot is unpredictable, with incredible tension and a plot that kept me completely invested. As with most Kane thrillers, everything reaches a tipping point of almost absolute ridiculousness, but it’s always brought back around for a satisfying ending! I’d highly recommend this to anyone who loves thrillers, drama, and fast-paced reads!
