Miss Congeniality meets The Bachelor in this action-packed rom-com debut about an investigative journalist who sneaks onto reality TV only to fall for the wrong guy.
When I was in college, my friend group was composed of consistent Bachelor watchers. And after being introduced, I was hooked immediately, and for good reason. In the 8 years that I regularly watched the Bachelor, I saw every variety of obsession, mental health spirals, cheating, lying, redemption, and using the same 5 phrases 37 million times. “Can I steal him from you?” “I don’t think she’s here for the right reasons.” “I’m here for love.” “Ladies, this is the final rose of the evening.” “Tune in next week for our most dramatic episode yet!” And Most Eligible delivered that exact feeling in book form!
The story follows Georgia Rose, a freelance journalist who’s been cast in the newest season of Love Shack. In addition, this year’s host is a previous Love Shack bachelor-turned-country-star, Rhett Auburn. And unfortunately for Georgia, when she had a one-night stand with Rhett the year before.
I loved the set-up of this book and the immediate tension. Rhett and Georgia’s chemistry is palpable from the start, but the overall environment’s tension is what was truly intoxicating. Georgia finds herself unconsciously following all the hallmarks of the show, from her immediate competitive spirit to her realization that the true prize was the friends she found along the way. The undercover reporter plot gets a little wacky in the middle, but nothing is out of the realm of what I watched on TV between 2015 and 2022, I promise.
Overall, this was a fun and immersive suspenseful rom-com. If you’re not currently and have never been a Bachelor Nation participant, I’m not sure if you’d enjoy this or find it insane, but I think it’s worth a shot! I did listen to this as an audiobook, and really enjoyed the narrator, Amanda Leigh Cobb. However, there are lots of PR quotes and other show-related tidbits at the front of each chapter that flowed better when I was reading the ebook!
Thanks to Macmillan Audio for the free audiobook and St. Martin’s for the free ebook in exchange for an honest review!
