Free-spirited travel influencer Hannah Spencer has spent five years touring the country in her vintage van. An unexpected inheritance from her Pops brings Hannah to Cape Split, North Carolina, where she learns she’s the new owner of a worse-for-wear seaside beach house. Or, rather, fifty percent of one. Turns out Simon O’Malley inherited the other half from his Gramps.
As Simon and Hannah spend the summer tag-teaming repairs on the crumbling cottage, they discover the house was once home to a timeless love story. Soon, they begin to wonder if the house’s romantic past may be a good omen for their future together. But there’s one problem—Simon is set on selling the property at the end of the summer.
I adore witty banter, unique and almost absurd plots, and romances that are deep and emotional. And that’s why I adore Jenn McKinlay’s writing. Her newest book, The Summer Share, focuses on two hardworking, independent adults who’ve each inherited a beach house from a recently deceased grandfather. Hannah is a van life influencer ready to put down some roots, while Simon is excited to sell. So imagine Hannah and Simon’s surprise to discover their grandfathers co-owned the cottage, and stipulated that Hannah and Simon must live in the house together for two months before making any decisions on its future.
Hannah stole my heart immediately. She’s a bright, larger than life, ray of sunshine with Dude, the coolest dog to ever exist. Simon also quickly won me over. His professional and no-nonsense shell protects a soft and sweet man who cares about his family above all else.
In addition to featuring forced proximity at a beach house, the book is set in a tiny coastal town with the sweetest (and silliest) neighbors imaginable. As Hannah and Simon explore the town their grandfathers lived in, I fell in love. I wanted to jump into the story and live in Cape Split forever.
I really enjoyed the characters (obviously) and appreciated the unique plot. The last third of the book had a few scenes that pulled me out a little bit, but overall I was over the moon about this book and its development. I’d highly recommend this to anyone looking for a fresh summer romance!
