Retired librarian Neeti Shah was hoping for a restful life with her chai-loving friends, but when the body of a neighbor, a childhood friend of Neeti’s, turns up dead and the killer’s MO is similar to that of Neeti’s most recent book club read, things start to get out of control.
But Neeti and her club members need to be careful. As more bodies turn up and more suspects start to appear, they’ll need to find the killer before they end up in hot water!
There is something so soothing about a mature, no-nonsense, competent woman who takes charge of a mismanaged situation. And retired librarian Neeti Shah was exactly that. Neeti lives in a small community with a dramatic HOA, gossipy neighbors, and a murder mystery on her hands. Joining forces with her neighbors, Neeti is determined to get answers and hold the responsible people accountable.
This story had all the classic retirees-solve-a-murder ingredients. Neeti is the logical and methodical leader. Peggy is the quirky best friend with her husband, Lawrence, who provides the pearls of wisdom. Myra and her son are the young blood, and Megan the police officer is their inside source. Together, this motley crew recruits even more neighbors as Megan secretly works against her captain’s orders.
Overall, this book was exactly what I expected. There were some classic twists, several red herrings, and an overall cozy mystery atmosphere, which was all ideal for me. There were some moments where it felt like there were too many cooks in the kitchen, specifically in group settings. The characters would be discussing the plot at hand, and after pages of conversation, an additional character would join the dialogue with no introduction, giving me a jumpscare. Other than that, the book flowed and the plot kept me fully engrossed.
If you’re looking for a book to pique your interest, introduce you to a band of lovable characters, and encourage you to drink more chai, this is a perfect pick!
