Marie Jones has hit rock bottom, finds on the verge of eviction, broke and alone, in the midst of an August heat wave.
Then she gets a call that might change everything. Sje is asked to find evidence of a woman having an extra-marital affair. The case seems simple enough. The only hitch is that it’s on Murder Island, a private island for the uber-rich just outside of New York City. But a job’s a job, and maybe it’ll be good to get out of town for a bit.
When my book club read Murder on Sex Island earlier this year, I knew I’d be invested in the whole series. And Sex on Murder Island was a perfect second book in the series. The series follows Marie Jones, a small-time private investigator who has found herself in a variety of insane situations in the last year. In her bigger escapades, Marie uses an alter ego, Luella van Horn.
Murder on Sex Island took Luella to a filmed reality TV show. For her second book, Luella is whisked away to Murder Island, a private island just off NYC. A husband has hired her to get proof that his wife is cheating, and wants Luella posing as his cousin as she stays in their mansion. And lo and behold, the uber-rich, ulta-private people who live on Murder Island are all really weird, leaving Luella a whole host of odd things to uncover.
These books are funny, campy, and absolutely insane fun to read. If you’re looking for a serious procedural murder mystery series, this is not for you. However, if you are looking for a series full of light, quick reads that are laugh-out-loud funny with tongue-in-cheek narration (and phenomenal actual narration from the author herself), you absolutely need to pick up this series!
